Freedom to Learn Illinois is an organization that empowers at-risk Illinois families to determine the best K-12 education for their children by cultivating private philanthropy and advancing public policy that expand educational options for children in need.
On August 12 Freedom to Learn Illinois awarded Opportunity Scholarships to families in need who wanted to send their child to the school that best serves the need of the child. 15 Families were selected in a lottery to receive an Opportunity Scholarship for their incoming Kindergarten or 1st grader to attend the school of their choice. Each Scholarship paid $5000 per year for the student during their primary (K-8) school years. The student was eligible if they qualified for a free or reduced lunch. This programs goal is to serve as a template for a much broader school choice program.
