For the 2020-2021 school year, Gov. Pritzker stood on the sidelines empowering teacher unions and school boards who kept children out of the classroom and in front of screens. Students with special education needs were left to suffer and regress, and parents could not return to work.

Now in reelection mode, Gov. Pritzker feels like he has “to do something.” So after months of leaving families in limbo with a patchwork of 859 districts making their own decisions on their own timelines, he is mandating masks for students and teachers.

Even more confusingly, Gov. Pritzker is simultaneously taking a victory lap with TV ads celebrating his COVID successes while forcing students to mask up.

Gov. Pritzker’s arbitrary swings between the extremes of a completely hands-off approach and a uniform statewide mandate shows he is more concerned with following the polls than following the science.
